Alternative Access to the SMART Table

At ATIA 2012 in Orlando, Florida this week, one of the popular questions at the SMART Technologies Booth #105 is:

What happens if my student can’t directly interact with the SMART Table?

The SMART Table interactive learning center is a collaborative learning tool that allows up to 40 simultaneous touches.  The word collaboration implies that ALL students should be able to participate together in a shared lesson.  I put together a quick video today to demonstrate how alternative access (a sample of Ablenet’s mini joystick and the Rock as well as DynaVox’s Maestro) can work through the USB port on the SMART Table to provide students with multiple means of interacting with curriculum together.   It is important to remember that proper assessment by a registered professional (e.g., Occupational Therapist, Physiotherapist, Children’s Treatment Center multi-disciplinary team) is key to selecting the most appropriate alternate access method.
